The Reel World

Rose and Bernard grew to be two of the most beloved background characters in LOST. So much so, that the show gave them their own flashback episode, providing us with their “meet cute”, the reason they were in Australia, and Rose’s unique reason for not wanting to be rescued.

Our second episode is much less pleasant. As the death toll doubles, rumor and innuendo began to swirl in regards to the real life drama surrounding the actresses whose times on the show came to the end. Our hosts tackle these rumors while also giving their summation of the two characters lifetimes on the island. The drama is ramping up as we inch closer to the season two finale! The Hatch unexpectedly locking down turns out to be a blessing in disguise, as it reveals a map of unknown origin to Locke, whose trapped under a blast door and needs to push the button before the timer runs out. Hurley’s food addiction overcomes him in the form a friend from his life of the Island, who isn’t all he seems to be. This week, it’s all about babies! Aaron is sick and Claire unlocks her memories from the time she was kidnapped by the Others in the hopes of finding out what made Aaron sick and how he can be cured. Sun experiences her own miracle after her tumultuous past with Jin prior to the Island where she learned she couldn’t conceive. Claire’s story reveals a lot of details about the Others as we find out exactly what she experienced during her time away, while Sun’s episode ends with one of the best lines in the shows history. Two episodes lead to two dynamic changes. First, Sawyer flexes his con man muscles to take back what he feels is rightfully his. Then, Sayid flexes his “interrogation” muscles when Rousseau captures a man named Henry Gale, who may or may not be one of the Others. In our flashbacks we see one of Sawyer’s emotions potentially ruin one of his bigger cons, and we learn how Sayid learned his skill of torture – and it’s likely not in the way you’d expect.

Our main island Survivors cross paths with the Others in search of Michael, a meeting which causes Jack to take action. Charlie’s hallucinations and erratic behavior lead some of the Survivors to believe he’s back on heroin – but is he? In our flashbacks, we learn what lead to Jack and Sarah splitting, and how Charlie knows all too well the burden of being a junkie father as he watched his brother from afar.

These episodes lead to side discussions on certain aspects of the show treading water in this portion of Season Two, and a great featurette from the bonus features of the box set adds some valuable insight into all the care each LOST episode has put into it.
