There Will Be Movies – Ep. 106: The Batman

It seems Matt truly can just have everything he wants as he follows up on his most controversial selection ever last week with truly exhaustive detail on The Batman, resulting in one of our longest episodes ever. Sorry, Ben.

This is a first for this particular podcast, which used to have a ‘No Capes’ rule, but we tossed most of these restrictions out for this volume, which means the floodgates really burst as we get into one of fiction’s most enduring characters, the career of Matt Reeves, the various influences of this movie and its messy development history and try and solve some riddles together.

Pack a lunch!

The Tape Crusaders – Episode 20: Batman: Caped Crusader

Somehow, Mike & Matt have returned to Gotham because DC decided to make the first new Batman cartoon in over a decade!

They discuss the tone of the show, the big creative swings, the villains, Batman himself, the possible future of the series and of course the career of John Vernon.

The Superhero Pantheon: The Batman (Rewatch)

Jerome and Brian take out their vengeance on all of the DC movies this decade by reviewing one of the two good ones (the other will be discussed briefly in two weeks). Is this indeed the fifth Batman worthy enough for the Pantheon? Also, why has 1995 been so influential on this character?

Ranking the Batman Films (Again, but better this time!)

Matt Waters and Mike Thomas ranked the Batman films back in 2017. Five years later we are doing it again but bringing Jerome Cusson and Ben Phillips along for the ride this time.

We also laid some new ground rules. 1.) The film had to receive a wide theatrical release. 2.) Justice League and Suicide Squad movies do not count, but v. Superman does.

Again, here are the voters.

Matt Waters
Jerome Cusson
Ben Phillips
Mike Thomas

12) Batman & Robin

The Tape Crusaders – Episode #19: The Batman

The Batman is here and that means Mike & Matt are back with a new episode of The Tape Crusaders.

They discuss the tone, the run time, casting choices and an unfortunate divide in their favourite source material. Long time listeners will be rewarded… and newbies will get it summarised for them anyway. Smile for the camera!

The Superhero Pantheon: The Batman (Theatrical Review)

Jerome and Brian examine a new release this week. Did the world really need a three hour noir Batman story? Maybe not but what a tremendous effort from Matt Reeves. After reinventing the ‘Apes’ franchise for the 21st century, Reeves does something similar for Batman.

We get a lot of Batman in the suit but very little Andy Serkis. We also get a number of people from the rogue’s gallery, including an unwelcome tease. Enjoy our nearly hour long discussion on one of the best modern superhero movies of these first couple years of the decade.

10 Hopes and Fears for The Batman

Logo The first trailer for Matt Reeves’ The Batman has dropped and people are freaking the eff out. I myself spent most of the next day watching it on progressively larger screens. A litany of breakdown videos have launched since then, including people solving one of the riddles! Neat!

The movie is obviously a long way off, with a tentative release date of 2021, and hasn’t even finished filming due to the whole global pandemic situation. But why let tiny details like that get in the way of wild speculation??? Here are 10 Hopes and Fears for the movie ahead of its release: Continue reading 10 Hopes and Fears for The Batman

Pantheon Plus: War for the Planet of the Apes

Jerome and Brian finish their discussion of the modern ape trilogy as they examine perhaps the best movie of the whole franchise. It’s the end of Caesar’s journey but not before learning about how the deadly virus has evolved and how the military can go a little crazy. Jerome is also subtweeting on this podcast about another film franchise in a couple of spots. You can probably figure it out. Continue reading Pantheon Plus: War for the Planet of the Apes

Pantheon Plus: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

2014_28film

Jerome and Brian continue their discussion of the modern apes trilogy by discussing the follow-up sequel. They discuss the evolution of the incredible visuals and some slightly better human performances. They also again address the misnaming of the movies of this trilogy.
