Ranking the James Gunn DCU (Live-Action) Projects

I am not committing to watching all the animated slop coming down the pike. But I am pretty fascinated by what James Gunn is cooking up right now even if it’s not exactly been tailored to my tastes.

Ranking the Coen Bros. Films

Films to Rewatch: Intolerable Cruelty

Films to Watch: The Ladykillers

I have gone on a journey with the Coen Brothers throughout almost my entire life. I was introduced to (some of) their films at a very early (probably too early) age, and I have been watching them ever since. At one point though, I grew rather cold on them. I am not sure exactly, but I consistently found myself feeling “over” them when I attempted to watch anything by them. Then Adam Nayman’s book rekindled my interest in them, and I realized what elements of them I adore and which don’t hit.

There Will Be Movies – Ep. 102: I’m Thinking of Ending Things

Make sure your seatbelts are on because it’s time for 40 minutes of uncomfortable car journeys, rapidly-changing hobbies, ice cream in the snow and of course a great deal of allegorical discourse. Never change, Charlie Kaufman.

Ranking the Paul Thomas Anderson Films

PT Anderson is one of the last real United States studio-backed filmmakers left. When his films come out, it is still something of an event – an all-too tragically rare thing these days. When looking back at his career, you can pretty neatly divided into two distinct halves. Before Blood, he made a lot of notable films very well, but in retrospect, they do not overall stand out as much. From Blood on though, he really found his own distinct voice and visual style and has just been off to the races ever since. Continue reading Ranking the Paul Thomas Anderson Films

Ranking the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Seasons

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is an iconic show that has been running for more than half of my life. It is a bit daunting to ever go back and watch a show that has been running for this long, but I finally committed after years of false starts. It was as good as I could have hoped for.

Ingmar Bergman was one of the most consistently good directors in cinema history. For nearly sixty years, he cranked out good film after good film with a handful becoming iconic and very few being artistic failures. Diving into the Criterion box set was a long project but well worth it.

Ranking the Sex and the City Seasons and Films

Sex and the City is one of the most important television shows ever. I had a mildly unusual experience watching the show. I watched most of the show when I was 13-15 years old, and I did not watch it week to week but sporadically on-demand and out of order. So, before re-watching the show in 2023, I had seen just about every single episode but really had no concept of when things happened. Besides the end. Boy, did I ever remember the end of this fucking show. This column will rank all movies and seasons of the Sex and the City world.
