In my head, I had seen a lot of Pedro Almodóvar films. When I actually went and tried to figure out which ones I had seen, I realized I had only watched 1-2 in college and then went to the theater a few years back to watch the very good Pain & Glory. The lasting impressions of my apparently brief dive into his work over the years were mostly that Carmen Maura was very good, Antonio Banderas was very good, and lots and lots of colors. Little did I know what I was getting myself into by diving deep into his work with the knowledge that HBOMax was removing all of his stuff after October 31, 2021. [This list will be updated as more films get watched over the years.]

There Will Be Movies – Ep. 110: The Taste of Things
Demonstrating why they don’t generally record at night, Ben & Matt have gone pretty insane in this episode as they give the world’s worst descriptions of Cannes and how to eat Ortolans. Whatever, man, I got hungry just writing the caption.

There Will Be Movies – Ep. 108: Decision to Leave
For the first time in the history of the podcast Matt took zero notes and tried to match Ben’s ‘off the dome’ acumen… and he simply could not have picked a worse episode given the various twists and turns at play in this Korean detective tale.

It seems Matt truly can just have everything he wants as he follows up on his most controversial selection ever last week with truly exhaustive detail on The Batman, resulting in one of our longest episodes ever. Sorry, Ben.
This is a first for this particular podcast, which used to have a ‘No Capes’ rule, but we tossed most of these restrictions out for this volume, which means the floodgates really burst as we get into one of fiction’s most enduring characters, the career of Matt Reeves, the various influences of this movie and its messy development history and try and solve some riddles together.

It took me a long time to finally watch The Shield in full. A decade-plus ago I had dipped my toe in the waters but did not get in. I heard all the praise from all the credible sources. I knew I had to get to it. And I finally did this year. I am delighted to report that the show is as good as people say.
