Ranking the Brian De Palma Films
Still Need to Watch: The Wedding Party, Dionysus in ’69
Brian De Palma is one of the greatest directors ever. After years of dismissing him out of hand due to a bad early impression his films made on me, I have thankfully and finally re-visited him and seen the light. He has made some of the most sincerely fascinating and compelling films that I have ever seen.
Ranking the Melvin Van Peebles Films
Films I Still Need To See: Identity Crisis, Vrooom Vroom Vroooom, Le Conte du ventre plein, Confessionsofa Ex-Doofus-ItchyFooted Mutha
Melvin Van Peebles was a true American genius. His films are as compelling and as interesting as any American director ever.
Ranking the John Wick Films
The John Wick movies (no matter if they descend into a period of total mediocrity or not) will always have a special place in my heart for being a big part of restoring Keanu Reeves’ status as a big star in Hollywood. Here is how I rank the films (so far). Continue reading Ranking the John Wick Films
Ranking the Superman Films
Superman has never been a superhero that I was drawn to due to all the obvious reasons about him being too difficult to kill, etc. As I get older, I do find him more fascinating at the very least as a pop culture artifact. And that brings us to this column.
For the purposes of this column, I decided to only count the Superman solo projects. Thus, Man of Steel is the only Snyderverse film being included for an example.
Ranking the Dennis Hopper Films
It was very late in life that I learned that Dennis Hopper was an interesting filmmaker. I cannot explain exactly why it took so long for me to learn this; I can only guess it’s because all of his films after Easy Rider did not really receive the mainstream recognition and success that his debut did. If you are a fool like I was and ignored his post-Riders work, you owe it to yourself to check a lot of them out. They kick ass.
Ranking The Bear Seasons
The Bear is THE trendy show of the moment. It is perfectly fine for the most part. The hype is insane, but when the masses are starving they will think meat loaf is filet mignon. I am a snob. So be it.
Ranking the David Cronenberg Films
David Cronenberg is one of the most interesting filmmakers who has ever done it. He understands the human experience so well, and how much horniness and fear of our bodies is inherent to our lives. No one does it like him.
Ranking the Francis Ford Coppola Films
Still Need to Watch: Finian’s Rainbow, Gardens of Stone
Not Gonna Lie, Probably Will Never Watch, Life is Too Short: Jack
Francis Ford Coppola is such an icon and is one of those figures that you sometimes forget to actually look at the word he has produced when you assess his abilities and contributions to the world of cinema. He has made some of the best, biggest and most important movies ever made. He has made some financial disasters. He has made some real intimate and personal movies. And more importantly his work suggests he has rarely ever stopped exploring through art what it means to be alive in a very messed up world.
