Search for Justice – 4 Takeaways from Justice League: War

I will be checking out these Justice League animated movies as much as possible. I will be using the same four questions I use here to assess each film.

Best League Member?

This is kinda a by default situation. Michelle Monaghan is FINE in the role of Wonder Woman, but it’s not a real noteworthy performance. It’s mostly just that her fish out of water routine is at least mostly a winner, and a lot of the other characters have got nothing going for them.

Weak Link?

Is there such a thing as a fun Green Lantern character? Are they all just annoying? All he does is crack unfunny jokes and does not maximize his infinitely useful powers to solve all problems?? Anyway, Justin Kirk did not get much to do here besides be grating, and grating he was in this film. They did at least understand all that and let Darkseid kick his ass.

Worthy Villain?

Darkseid seems kind of boring! Clearly the Justice League need someone powerful to go up against. But there should be at least a more interesting plan. He just sends a bunch of gargoyles to Earth and then beats up the Justice League a lot. There’s not much there.

Recommendation?

Doing a full-stop Justice League origins movie where the characters do not even know each other going into the film is a TALL ORDER and choosing to put yourself behind the eight ball. Introducing the majority of characters as if they are brand new to their powers or the world while also establishing an apocalyptic threat to the entire planet simultaneously is also a mighty challenge. AND doing a quick Evil Superman arc as well. How could anyone think that was a good idea? How could anyone conceive of doing such a thing?????

It is at least better than The Whedon Cut though! So, if you’re interested in a heavily condensed and animated version of the Snyder/Whedon Justice League, I guess watch this? Mild Thumbs Down.
