#JamesBondFiles: A View to a Kill

Director: John Glen

Year of Release: 1985

Should you watch it? Yes

Why?

A View to a Kill was Roger Moore’s final James Bond, and it was overall a fine note to go out on. Moore was steady as he goes in this role and did not phone this one in. Christopher Walken walked the fine line of being megalomaniacal without being a cartoon just right. They had some goofy but funny set pieces that in many ways felt different than had come before in the series. It was just rock solid.

How is the Bond?

In his final appearance as James Bond, Roger Moore showed all his strengths and weaknesses as Bond. He works as a wholesome Bond who is winking at the camera a little. He does not work as a Connery knockoff that is constantly being a sex pest. Here they thankfully made him a little more horny than pesty which worked well in the vibes flavor of the film.

How is the Bond Woman?

Man, Tanya Roberts is just so horrific in this film. If she was in it any more than she was, she probably is bad enough to sink the whole film. If someone wanted to argue that Grace Jones’ May Day is the actual Bond Woman then this film has one of the best Bond Women of all time.

How is the Bond Villain?

Christopher Walken is hilarious and fun in this role. His big plan is to end Silicon Valley so we really have to question who is the hero and who is the villain of the story.

Does the film irresponsibly present the West as the hero of the world and thus promote imperialism and colonialism as inherently positive?

Yes.
